Quick Tips to a Healthy Diet

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans describe a healthy diet as one that:

  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products;
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and
  • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage consumers to:

  • Balance Calories
    • Enjoy your food, but eat less
    • Avoid over-sized portions
  • Increase Fruits and Vegetables, Whole Grains and Fat-Free or Low-Fat Milk
    • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables
    • Make at least half your grains whole grains
    • Switch to fat-free (skim) or low-fat (1%) milk
  • Reduce Sodium and Sugar
    • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals – and choose foods with lower amounts
    • Replace sugary drinks with water
