We need food from every food group every day….Preschoolers will learn when to eat and what to eat through age appropriate songs, rhymes and pretend play. Children identify healthy and less healthy food choices with the help of "Healthy Harry" and "Grumpy Gus" puppets; use "Poe pretend-food "to plan and safely prepare a balanced meal. The importance of trying at least "just one bite" of new foods will also be addressed!

Is "play" physical activity? You bet! This session will examine the questions of "What is exercise?" and "What does it mean to be healthy or unhealthy?" Participants experience the correlation between nutrition and physical activity; calories in = calories out. They will discover their personal fitness likes and dislikes and the risks associated with poor health behaviors while learning how physical activity benefits every aspect of their lives.

Have your students ever asked...Why do we need food? What is "MyPlate"? What are the different food groups and do I need to eat foods from all of them? How does media influence food choices? Research suggests that the majority of children involved in bullying are the bystanders. "Don't Stand By" uses an intervention strategy that focuses time and skill building to help bystanders stand up and speak up when it comes to bullying in their schools, neighborhoods and communities. This interactive program allows participants many opportunities for discussion and problem-solving.
By taking a close look at drug and alcohol use and abuse, in addition to tobacco usage and media violence, students will gain valuable insights and tools to help make healthy lifestyle choices.
Grade Level: 5th | Program Length: 60 minutes
Students will learn the truth about the dangers of inhalants and the gateway drugs (tobacco, alcohol and marijuana) through an interactive classroom game modeled after the popular television program, "Are you You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?." The dangers and consequences associated with use and abuse will be discussed through the use of exhibits, BrainPop videos and interactive activities. Students will conclude the session with participation in an activity reinforcing refusal skills.
Grade Level: 6th - 8th | Program Length: 60 minutes
Students will discover how using drugs and alcohol can damage their brains and bodies. This class is centered around interactive activities that focus on "showing and not telling" kids how their brains are affected by alcohol and drug (inhalants, marijuana) use. Real life scenarios are used to help students analyze how a "drugged" brain affects their actions and decision making skills. Students will also engage in role-play reinforcing refusal skills.
Grade Level: 9th - 12th | Program Length: 60 minutes w/o speaker; 90 minutes w/speaker
Teenagers live in a world of choices. Explore the risks and consequences associated with decision making; specifically those involving alcohol, drugs and personal injury/accidents. Students will learn about the consequences of experimenting with alcohol, marijuana, prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse. Students will also engage in a discussion with an individual who has sustained a major life- changing spinal cord injury as a result of his decision to abuse alcohol and drugs.
Grade Level: 3rd - 5th | Program Length: 45 minutes
Students learn about the "Gateway Drugs" and their effects on the body in a fun and engaging session. Interactive activities and a short movie illustrate key concepts as well as alternatives to drug use and abuse. This important information will help keep children on the right track!

Drugs Uncovered: What Parents Need to Know (Drugs Uncovered), is an interactive program that targets parents of upper elementary, middle school and high school students. Drugs Uncovered introduces parents to the current trends regarding alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; health risks associated with adolescent use/abuse; the North Carolina alcohol laws and parental responsibility; and techniques for open communication and dialog with adolescents.
The family life theater features larger than life, 3-D models of the reproductive systems. All family life curriculums adhere to the strict parameters for family life education as prescribed by respective schools and districts.

Engage in an honest conversation regarding the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during puberty. Discuss the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems, the menstrual cycle and fertilization. Interactive activities and an age appropriate movie reinforce important messages covered during the program.
Grade Level: 6th - 8th | Program Length: 60 minutes
Review puberty and the male and female reproductive systems so participants can discuss the menstrual cycle, fertilization, implantation, fetal development and the birth of a baby. Sexually transmitted infections (including HIV/AIDS) are briefly introduced at the conclusion of the program. Interactive activities are utilized to reinforce program content.
Grade Level: 9th - 12th | Program Length: 60 - 90 minutes
Discuss and encourage the benefits of abstinence until marriage, while investigating the transmission, symptoms and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS. Explore STI and pregnancy prevention methods including failure rates. Interactive activities, including the "Empathy Belly," are utilized to reinforce program content.

What is TRU...
Tobacco.Reality.Unfiltered. (TRU) is the Health and Wellness Trust Fund's (HWTF's) statewide initiative to prevent tobacco use among teens. HWTF grantees across the state have founded more that 155 TRU groups, including Wake County TRU. Since the September 2007 launch of the TRU Recruitment Campaign, over 10,000 NC teens have pledged to be tobacco free at the TRU website: www.realityunfiltered.com.

In conjunction with Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines, the Poe Center offers a number of educational programs designed especially for Girl Scouts of all age ranges.
Grade Level: Daisy Girl Scouts | Program Length: 3 hours
It's time to be explorers! Meet Mr. Big Mouth while exploring your way to a "Super Smile" by learning how to properly brush and floss away Sugar Bugs. Daisies explore the food guide pyramid, and learn the importance of choosing healthy snacks, physical activity and sleep. Daisies also have an opportunity to climb a nutrition wall, weave through a healthy choices maze, zip down a tongue slide, balance on a giant skeleton, navigate a nerve net and much, much more!
Grade Level: Brownie Girl Scouts | Program Length: 3 hours
Girls attend two sessions (Body Power and Food & Physical Activity Power) and an adventure through the Cranium Connection to complete the "My Body - Try It" patch program. Learn about the different body systems and how to keep them healthy. Place foods on the gigantic Food Guide Pyramid. Practice exercises to get the heart pumping and the body moving. The Poe Center's Cranium Connection and PlayWell Park, help Brownies on a scavenger hunt where they learn all about healthy lifestyle habits, the nervous system and Poe's Points of Prevention.
Grade Level: Teen Girl Scouts | Program Length: 3 hours
Teen Girl Scouts discover through interactive programs that being healthy not only means having healthy eating and exercise habits but also having healthy relationships.
Participants will examine eating habits that enhance good nutrition and, focus on reading food labels, as well as learn about weight management, media's role in diet fads and trends, body types, eating disorders and chronic diseases that occur due to physical inactivity and poor nutritional habits.
In addition, teens explore how to recognize the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships. Discussions examine the topics of: equality, respect, and effective communication with friends, boyfriends, parents, and siblings.

Girl Talk for Mom and & Me addresses the timely topic of adolescent growth and development and the physical, social and emotional changes that girls experience during puberty. 3-D theater exhibits, hands-on activities, movies and candid discussions help moms and daughters explore a range of topics from the workings of the reproductive system to the menstrual cycle to feminine hygiene protection and more.
