Parents Matter! Program at the Poe Center

10/22/2012 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Poe Center in Raleigh, NC

Parents and guardians of pre-teens ( 9 to 14 years old ) are invited to a FREE adult series
designed to equip parents and guardians with the knowledge and skills to be their child(ren)’s sex educator and to realize the importance of talking openly and frequently with children about sex.  No specific values or beliefs are  advocated; parents will learn to communicate their own family values comfortably.

Parents Matter! is a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) evidence-based program that provides parents and guardians with the communication tools and information necessary to initiate important discussions related to sexual health, family values and personal responsibility with their child. This community-level family prevention program is designed to enhance protective parenting practices and promote parent-child discussions about sexuality and sexual risk reduction.

Parents Matter! is a five week program held on Monday evenings
from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Poe Center in Raleigh, 27610.

(Dinner and childcare are included for each registered participant)

Sessions will be held on the following Mondays:
Monday, September 24
Monday, October 1
Monday, October 8
Monday, October 15
Monday, October 22

The goals of the program for participants are to:

  • Learn how to become better health teachers for their child(ren)
  • Learn how to help their child(ren) cope with sexual messages that may not be good for them
  • Build knowledge and skills so they can communicate their values about sex to their child(ren) more effectively
  • Provide information that they can share with others in their family

Through interactive activities, discussion and role-play, participants are able to learn and practice the skills necessary to become their child(ren)’s most valuable health/sex educator.  Because the family’s values are an important part of the sexual health message for children it is of major benefit that the messages children hear come from their home environment.  Many parents and guardians feel uncomfortable talking about sex with their child(ren) because they may feel they don’t have the facts or they aren’t sure how to get started.  Through the weekly lessons and practice provided by the Poe Center’s trained facilitators, parents and guardians will be able to then start these difficult conversations with their children.

Listen to what participants are saying about Parents Matter! at the Poe Center:

“I enjoyed the setting.  It was very relaxed and yet informative.  You were able to ask questions, make comments and laugh.”  “I like being able to hear all the different points of view that were discussed.”  “It was well planned and informative.”  “I enjoyed being able to interact with other parents who were going through the same challenges as I was.”  “I agree with the quote that was used, ‘One who learns teaches.’  The teachers were great and I am thankful for this opportunity!  I will tell others.”.
