Julie Messina
Senior Health Educator

A Maryland native, Julie moved to North Carolina to attend Elon University, where she received a BA in Women’s and Gender Studies. After relocating to Durham, Julie earned a certificate in English language education through Duke Continuing Studies. Julie spent a year teaching English at Durham Technical Community College before moving to Europe to teach there. She spent two years in Krakow, Poland, and one year in Prague, Czech Republic, then moved to England. On the south coast of England, Julie earned her MA in International Health Promotion at the University of Brighton while working in London on the Walking for Health program, Europe’s largest physical activity initiative, to encourage people to get walking in their local parks and green spaces. After eight years, Julie returned to the Tar Heel State and her beloved Durham. Julie joined the Poe Center in February 2012 as the Senior Nutrition Health Educator.

Julie is passionate about addressing health inequalities and empowering North Carolinians to make healthier food choices for themselves and their families, while promoting the benefits of regular physical activity. In her free time, Julie enjoys running on the streets and trails of Durham, doing Sudoku and crossword puzzles, reading murder mysteries, watching soccer, volunteering with Elon’s LGBTQIA Alumni Network and spending time with her husband, Martin, and recently adopted cat, Chorley.
