Monique Funches
Health Educator

Monique is a native of Winston-Salem North Carolina.  She recently received her Bachelor’s degree in Public Health Education from North Carolina Central University in May of 2012. Prior to her receiving her Bachelor’s degree, she completed an internship at Healing With CAARE Inc. (Case Management of AIDS and Addiction through Resources and Education) in Durham, North Carolina.  During her internship, she planned, implemented and evaluated three educational workshops on HIV awareness among high risk African Americans ages 18-24 living in Durham, North Carolina.  During her internship experience she was able to serve majority of her time as a health education resource.  Additionally, the internship provided her with the opportunity to expand her knowledge on program development and implementation.  This helped her begin to apply what she had learned throughout my academic coursework into her internship and future career as a public health professional.

In October of 2012 Monique joined the Poe Staff as an Occasional Health Educator primarily teaching one of the puberty programs to fifth and sixth grade students.  Monique is interested in sex education for adolescents and adults because she feels that every individual should be aware of sex, sexual relationships, reproduction, birth control, sexually-transmitted infections and sexual abuse. Thus far she has found fulfillment with educating and increasing each student’s awareness on some of the physical, social and emotional changes adolescents’ may experience as they begin to reach puberty.  She has found that students are curious to know what changes they may experience throughout puberty.  She is passionate in making sure that each student fully understands what she is teaching and has an increased awareness on puberty and the changes that come along with puberty.

Monique is also interested in nutrition, physical activity and drug prevention awareness.  She hopes that as an Occasional Health Educator this will prepare her in learning where her niche is in Public Health.  She also believes this will provide her with other opportunities in Public Health.  Monique plans to attend graduate school in the near future where she will either pursue a Masters in Public Health or go back for a graduate degree in Mental Health Counseling.  In the meantime, Monique is focused on setting a foundation for her public health career.  During her spare time, Monique enjoys reading, writing poetry, swimming, kayaking (during the summer months), spending time with family and friends and learning how to cook different dishes.
