Health Educator
ext. 321

Pat Smeallie, BS, CHES has been a Health Educator at the Poe Center since January 2002. She received her Associates Degree in Nursing many years ago and worked in a dermatology office in Cleveland Ohio for over 30 years. When she moved to North Carolina, and went back to complete her bachelor’s degree she chose the major of Community Health Education. Pat has a passion to support and encourage people to be healthy and whole in all aspects of their lives, so this was a natural choice for her. She received her B.S. from The University of North Carolina Greensboro in December 2001. While still in school, she interned at the Poe Center and became very enthusiastic about the wellness of children. After graduation she felt very fortunate to be hired by Poe to be one of their Health Educators.

Pat is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) a national certification for health educators, and has served in the past on the board of the North Carolina Society of Public Health Educators (NCSOPHE.). She especially enjoys working with the younger children in the areas of dental health, nutrition and physical activity. She felt very privileged to be part of the Wholesome Routines effort that delivered nutrition and physical activity programming to underserved children. Pat also uses her knowledge and skills to coordinate the Health Ministry at her church.

Pat was married for almost 50 years and is adjusting to the new normal in her life after the death of her husband Richard in October 2008. When not working or volunteering she enjoys reading, walking, spending time with her three almost grown grandchildren and playing with her puppy Zeke.

Though not as young in years as her colleagues, Pat still considers herself young at heart and hopes to have many more years of making a difference in helping people choose healthy lifestyles.
