Drugs Uncovered: What Parents and Adults Need to Know and “For the Health of It” – West Johnson High School

Parents, guardians, educators and counselors are invited to a FREE workshop on drug and alcohol abuse and ways to equip young people with the skills to make healthy choices.

The workshop, “Drugs Uncovered: What Parents and Adults Need to Know”, will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at West Johnson High School, located at 5935 Raleigh Rd, Benson, NC 27504. .

“For the Health of It,” a program for elementary-middle schoolers will be offered at the same time. During “For the Health of It,” students will discover how using drugs and alcohol can damage their brains and bodies. This class is centered around interactive activities that focus on “showing and not telling” kids how their brains are affected by alcohol and drug (inhalants, marijuana) use. Real life scenarios are used to help students analyze how a “drugged” brain affects their actions and decision making skills. Students will also engage in role-play reinforcing refusal skills.

This programming is presented by
The Poe Center for Health Education

The Poe Center’s DRUGS UNCOVERED explores the teenage alcohol, tobacco, and other drug culture of today. The two hour workshop combines a lecture-style format with an interactive, traveling exhibit. At approximately 20’ X 20’, the Poe Center’s “Teenager of Today’s Bedroom” holds over 70 references to substances that include elements of pop culture and common and not-so-common hiding places for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

Participants will learn about trends in substance use and ways to communicate effectively with children and teens about these issues. All attendees will also receive free materials, including resources to educate young people about being drug-free and alcohol-free.

Parents and adults who work with elementary, middle and high school students are strongly encouraged to participate! The Drugs Uncovered program is for ADULTS ONLY!

For the Health of It is for elementary-middle schoolers.
