What Do Kids Need to Know and When Do They Need to Know It

The NC School Health Training Center and the NC Department of Public Instruction are offering workshops in puberty education, abstinence and parent/youth communication. The six-hour training will include .6 CEUs and materials provided at no cost to the school system.

Who should attend?

Teachers, counselors, and nurses who deliver puberty education for grades 4, 5 and 6.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • describe the experience of puberty & the physical, social & emotional changes which occur.
  • identify the benefits of abstinence from sexual experimentation.
  • discuss how developing skills in decision making, communication & using resources help youth & families reduce the pressures associated with puberty.
  • demonstrate activities for teaching about puberty & abstinence for children grades 4, 5 & 6.
  • describe how to provide guidance to parents who want to talk with their child about reproductive health & safety.
  • work with children & families about these issues with knowledge, skills & sensitivity.

The NC Department of Public Instruction provides at no cost:

  • 6-hour workshop with certificate for .6 CEUs.
  • flash drive with 9 lesson plans and 4 PowerPoints aligned with the Essential Standards in Healthful Living Education for grades 4, 5, 6.
  • breakfast snack and lunches.

Training will be held at the Poe Center for Health Education (224 Sunnybrook Rd, Raleigh 27610) on October 5, 2012 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
