#YouthCulture – A Workshop Series hosted at The Poe Center

Parents, guardians, educators and counselors are invited to a FREE workshop on the environment and culture around our youth.

The workshop, #YouthCulture, a program for adults, and For The Health of It, a program for youth, will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Pine Valley United Methodist Church – Fellowship Hall, located at 3788 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, NC 28403.

This program is presented by The Poe Center.

Light snacks will be provided. As of now, childcare is not available, but could change based on need. Please let us know if you need additional childcare.

The Poe Center’s #YouthCulture program is designed to empower parents and guardians by providing insight into the environment and culture around our youth. This 2-hour workshop explores how the developing adolescent brain shapes perceptions and behavior. All participants will receive a free packet of supportive materials and resources. Covered topics will include substance use, Internet safety, sexting, and healthy dating relationships. In addition, we will explore ways to enhance parent-child communication.

Parents and adults who work with elementary, middle and high school students are strongly encouraged to participate! This program is for ADULTS ONLY!

During For the Health of It, students will discover how using drugs and alcohol can damage their brains and bodies. This class is centered around interactive activities that focus on “showing and not telling” kids how their brains are affected by alcohol and drug (inhalants, marijuana) use. Real life scenarios are used to help students analyze how a “drugged” brain affects their actions and decision making skills. Students will also engage in role-play reinforcing refusal skills.

This program is for 6th to 8th graders.
