Who We Are

We are effective, valuable, and one-of-a-kind.

Our expert health educators partner with schools and organizations across the state to provide health education to children and adults. Engaging programs focus on six primary health topics, including nutrition & physical activity, adolescent development, general health, substance use prevention, dental health, and bullying prevention. Poe’s field trip destination in Raleigh is a one-of-a-kind- immersive experience featuring unique teaching spaces. Health educators can also bring programs directly to a school or organization and supplemental resources are available online. Over 87% of program participants report making positive behavior changes after a program with the Poe Center.

The Poe Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting the lives of North Carolina youth through health education. Since opening in Raleigh in 1991, the Poe Center has educated more than 1.3 million participants from 93 counties using innovative teaching theaters, exhibits and offsite programs.

By engaging in fun, highly interactive lessons, preschoolers through twelfth graders receive information that follows the NC DPI Essential Standards for Healthful Living Education on a variety of health topics, including nutrition, dental health, general health, family life and substance use prevention. The Poe Center also offers parent and family education programming.

Meet Seymour Poe

Hello there! My name is Seymour Poe and I am the Official Mascot of the Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education. Check out my interactive statue located by our Cranium Connection exhibit. Visitors can use the touch screen to learn more about substance use prevention. My job here at the Poe Center, along with our entire staff, is to be a resource for bullying prevention and bystander empowerment, general health and the human body, physical activity and nutrition, substance use prevention, family life topics and mental health wellness.
