The Flowering Dogwood is a small, deciduous understory tree that typically reaches 15 to 25 feet in height. Its showy “flowers” are actually clusters of small true flowers surrounded by four large, petal-like bracts. The foliage is oval-shaped, with veins that curve from the leaf base to the tip. Notably, the Flowering Dogwood is recognized as the state flower of North Carolina.
