Position Summary
The Development Senior Director (DSD) is the chief fundraiser for the Poe Center for Health Education and the architect of its philanthropic strategy. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will lead all philanthropic revenue: major gifts, capital, annual giving, planned giving, corporate and foundation support, and special events.
You will build and carry a personal portfolio of major donors and prospects and set the strategy for every solicitation. You will lead and mentor a development team of two full-time and one part-time professionals who have outgrown their current roles and are ready for strategic guidance. You will reshape those roles and bring fundraising best practices to every part of the program. You will also be the Executive Director’s trusted fundraising advisor and the board’s partner, equipping the Fundraising Committee, Marketing Committee, and Poe Champions to open doors and close gifts. Your north star: a fundraising program that is diversified, data-driven, and built to sustain the Poe Center’s fiscal strength for decades.
Qualification Requirements
- 4-7 years of major gifts experience, with a track record of qualifying, cultivating, and closing major gifts and building a portfolio from the ground up
- Deep fundraising expertise and command of current best practices across every nonprofit revenue stream: individual and major gifts, planned giving, foundations, corporate contributions, and sponsorships
- Experience managing and mentoring a development team
- Board management experience, including engaging, training, and partnering with board members and committees
- Experience leading a team to plan and execute creative, successful special events
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
- Strong leadership, business, and organizational judgment, with sharp time management across multiple priorities
- Extensive experience with Raiser’s Edge, plus proficiency in Fund E-Z, Google Workspace, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
What Sets You Apart
- A seasoned strategist and mentor who develops people, delegates with confidence, and builds a team around its strengths
- Disciplined with time, keeping priorities moving and the team focused on what matters most
- A steward at heart who keeps donors close long after the gift
- A relationship builder who earns trust with donors, board members, volunteers, and staff alike
- Energetic and tenacious, with a genuine love of telling the Poe Center’s story
- A team player who does their best work in a collaborative, multicultural environment
- Mission-driven, and aligned with the Poe Center’s values of diversity, proactivity, integrity, communication, and respect
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Grow Major and Planned Gifts
- Build and manage a personal portfolio of major donors ($5,000+) and prospects, from identification, research, and qualification through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
- With the Executive Director and the Poe Center Champions, lead meetings and proposals to individuals, foundations, and corporations
- Prepare the Executive Director with clear, concise briefings before every donor meeting and solicitation
- Partner with the communications team on tailored materials for every major gift prospect
- Build the Poe Center’s planned giving program, honoring a legacy that already includes bequests and life insurance gifts from longtime friends
Elevate the Team
- Supervise and mentor two full-time and one part-time development staff through regular one-on-ones focused on growth and results
- Re-tool the team’s roles: assess each person’s strengths, redesign responsibilities around Poe’s goals, and give the team the strategic direction it is ready for
- Delegate with clarity so the team owns more and you can focus on major and planned gifts
- Oversee annual giving, events, digital communications, donor stewardship, and Raiser’s Edge
- Train board members, Poe Center Champions, staff, and volunteers in the principles and practice of fundraising
- Build a culture where every Poe Center colleague sees a role in philanthropy
Grow Our Giving Programs
- Your top priority is growing the Poe Center’s major and corporate giving. The development staff will run day-to-day programs like Poe Young Professionals, with your strategic direction.
- Major giving: expand the Poe Society, Poe’s recognition circle for leadership donors, into a growing base of committed major donors
- Corporate giving: scale the Annual Sponsors and Partners program so more businesses invest in Poe year-round
- Pipeline: guide the team as they grow Poe Young Professionals into a source of next-generation donors and volunteers
Run the Business of Fundraising
- Design and execute the Annual Development Plan with input from the Fundraising and Marketing Committees
- Own fundraising budgets, track major gift metrics, and evaluate campaign performance each year
- Lead creative planning, production, and evaluation of special events, including the Poe Center’s annual awards celebration
- Help the board shape and carry out the strategic plan

Why the Poe Center
- A mission with momentum: A recent $1.6 million PlayWELL Park renovation, a renovated Family Theater, Wake County’s first permanent Traffic Safety Course, and a first-of-its-kind Fortnite health game all point to an organization that keeps innovating.
- A board that is all in: You will work alongside a Fundraising Committee and Major Gifts Cabinet invested in your success.
- Room to build: Three established donor programs are ready to scale, and a talented team is ready to grow into bigger, more strategic roles under your leadership.
