    Join us on an interactive journey that explores the development associated with puberty, the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems, the menstrual cycle and conception. Subjects such as distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy relationships, effective refusal skills, and the difference between communicable and chronic diseases are all discussed. Additionally, the benefits of abstinence and communication with parents are emphasized throughout the program.

    Guy Talk will equip boys with accurate age-appropriate information developed to help with healthy growth and development. Workshop topics include the changes which happen during puberty, the reproductive system, proper nutrition, and hygiene.   • Healthy Relationships 101

    Healthy Relationships 101 explores the facets of what makes a healthy relationship.  Setting and communicating personal boundaries, identifying warning signs of unhealthy relationships, and identifying societal influences that impact relationships are discussed through engaging activities, multi-media, and thoughtful reflection.

  • Mountain Climbing: Reducing Risk and Setting Boundaries

    Being a young person is tough, and there are many difficult and complex decisions young people have to make – in particular regarding their sexual health. Mountain Climbing helps young people better understand the risks and benefits regarding different decisions they may make concerning their sexual health, including risk management, understanding STIs, forms of FDA approved contraceptives, and communication. Participants will get to participate in age-appropriate interactive activities to reinforce the program content.

  • Myth Busters

    There are so many myths and false information surrounding Sexually Transmitted Infections and Contraception methods. Myth Busters breaks those myths by discussing the facts about STI’s (including HIV/AIDS) and FDA approved contraception methods while stressing the importance of Abstinence as a positive choice for young people. Students will get to participate in age appropriate interactive activities to reinforce the program content.

    Presented by the Poe Center, Girl Talk 2 is a unique workshop designed for middle school-aged girls and their parents. This interactive, 1.5 hour workshop discusses the growth and development girls experience during puberty, the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems, the menstrual cycle, fertilization and conception. Internet safety and peer pressure are also discussed The program has been designed with activities that facilitate and encourage open parent-child communication.   • Parents Matter!

    Schedule this program for: Adults

    A CDC evidence-based program that empowers and educates parents/guardians of pre-teens (children ages 9-14) on how to be their own child’s sexual health and responsibility educator. Designed ultimately as a communication workshop, Parents Matter! helps parents/guardians dialogue more effectively with their child(ren) so that their values are being heard above those in the media.  The Parents Matter! program will include:

    • Tips on how to improve communication
    • Strategies for communicating your values to your child
    • Practice answering hard questions
    • Learning the truth about kids’ sexual behavior
    • Talking with other parents dealing with the same issues
    • Information about puberty and other health topics
    Dinner and child care are included with each session.
    Program Length: Five 2.5-hour sessions

  • Puberty Detectives

    Schedule this program for: 4th Grade

    Start the conversation about puberty and entering adolescence. Students step into the role of a detective as they learn to respect the differences of others, find the clues to determine the qualities of healthy and unhealthy relationships and investigate the physical, emotional and social changes related to puberty. Several interactive activities enhance the experience of the participant’s “training” before becoming an official Poe Center Puberty Detective.

    Engage in an honest conversation regarding the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during puberty. Interactive activities and an age appropriate movie reinforce important messages covered during the program.

    Reproduction: Healthy Responsibility focuses the benefits of delaying pregnancy.  The health, legal, financial, and social consequences of adolescent pregnancy and parenthood are discussed through engaging prompts, activities, and videos.  Participants recall the benefits of abstinence until marriage as well as review the FDA approved methods of contraception.

  • Facts of Life

    Facts of Life addresses the facts of puberty and the male and female reproductive systems so participants can review the menstrual cycle, fertilization, and implantation. Students will discuss the effects of culture, media, and family values on decisions they make. Facts about Sexually transmitted infections (including HIV and HPV)) are introduced. Methods to prevent sexually transmitted infections are summarized. Facts about what sexual harassment is and learning strategies to being safe are also discussed. Interactive activities are utilized to reinforce program content.

    Your Voice Matters! empowers parents/guardians with the knowledge and skills to effectively communicate with their children about the changes that occur during adolescence. The presentation includes an overview of changes during puberty, as well as tips and tools for parents for creating and maintaining open lines of communication. Conversations about puberty can be challenging, but your voice is instrumental in making sure any confusing messages or misinformation from other sources isn't the only thing your kids hear.
